Strings Hammers Wind :Serenade Melancolique in B Minor, Op.26 by Tchaikovsky

2004-05-13
Im listening to Rachmaninov today...his music is dark and thick like velvet curtains. curtains that keep out the cold of the russian winter.....i love russian music...its so intense and rich...

did you ever see Eyes Wide Shut? I think the piece that was used when tom cruise's character first walks in to the Masked Circle was by either Shostakovich or Gyorgy Ligeti. Without knowing what is being said....the mood is Heavy. Heavy and suffocating. The motivation behind the piece was life under the rule of Lenin. That Kubrick knew how to use music. I think, He is the only filmmaker to really know how to use it. That song seems to me...to sound like someone at the very edge of life...at the very edge of breathing..

and isn't that how the characters felt...as if in their relationship...there was no oxygen. I know I should really read the book...but I have enough to read at the moment.

There is a violin concerto Ive been trying to find for ages by Shostakovich...I have no memory of what it is called (or numbered as it were) I just remember hearing a story of a violinist that attempted to kill herself....and a month later...took the stage and as she said,"allowed all of my grief, anger, pain and fear to possess the room...through my violin"...I'd like to hear the music that gave so much of her agony a voice.

Music. for centuries it has been the language for the underdog...the voices of dissidents.

dissidents. prisoners. iraq. beheading. stop. stop. stop.

stop.

what could a composer do with this? the whirring sound of bulletts...the seething sound of electricity and fire. not new sounds to humanity. replacing flaming catapults and the sword through flesh...are bombs and more bombs...

what does blood and shattered bone sound like through the anals of the piano or cello or violin?

Is it strained high pitched and slowly declining...does it scream..like that of the voice of a mourning mother? father? son? daughter?

what does the sand feel like when you are laying in it begging god for your life? Does it inject. Does it race. Does it steal your breath.

is breath ever stolen. or is it sold.

From the voice of a soviet poet:

...But yet even then,

When on the entire planet

The animosity of tribes will come to an end,

Lies and sorrow will vanish...

1924 -Sergey Aleksandrovich Yesenin

Humanity. Will you Not Ever Learn.

You will suffer. Those that Survive will Create. Those that Survive will Educate and Remind.

Reach into the world around you. Reach into it....dip your feet in. Taste it. The salt and the plasma....the air and the drum skins.....

May we rise and survive and Create.

sorry for such a long winded and unorganized entry....

Love and Peace to the Universe

Love peace and mercy to those that are alone and afraid
